The “Nuevo Chamber” music of Musical Art Quintet melds influences from Africa, Argentina, and Cuba with Western classical traditions into globe-hopping, dance-inspiring, gorgeous work. The ensemble formed in 2008 in the Mission district of San Francisco during Sunday night jam sessions at Cafe Revolution. Although classically trained, the members are also skilled improvisers, each bringing a special area of expertise. Whether interpreting Argentine tango, Afro-Cuban son, klezmer, classical works, or even electronica, the Quintet is at home. Their infectious versatility is evident on recent recordings with the Nuevo Flamenco guitarist Stevan Pasero and with the tango group Trio Garufa.
