Music by the Bay

This unique evening of music and fun—presented before a stunning waterfront view of the San Francisco Bay—showcases the innovation and talent of California's oldest (and most enjoyable) professional chamber orchestra.

The event begins with an elegant champagne reception at 6:00, followed by a concert of Mozart, Prokofiev, and cabaret, starting at 7:00. Features include established vocalists Anja Strauss and Daniel Cilli, the return of rising star and Bay Area native Audrey Vardanega on piano, and a world premiere from the SFCO's "Incredible Shrinking Orchestra Project." A live auction at intermission features a short selection of must-have experiences, from wine tasting and private recitals, to a yacht cruise around the Bay and a vacation rental in Sun Valley during ski season. Gala tickets are $150 and $250 per person, with additional opportunities for sponsorship. Proceeds benefit the SFCO's complete season of admission-free concerts and educational programming.

The 2011-2012 season marks the 10th anniversary of Benjamin Simon's appointment to music director by founder Edgar Braun. The Chamber Orchestra's May 3 gala is an appropriate toast not only to their unique programming and exceptional talent, but also to his decade of successful leadership. Time will tell what further surprises lie ahead for the Bay Area's favorite chamber orchestra.

As the only professional orchestra in California offering a complete season of admission-free concerts, the SFCO is dedicated to making classical music fun and accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds in the Bay Area.

Amalia Piano Trio

Beethoven's Opus 1 signaled his readiness in 1795 to make his mark in the world of Viennese classical music, and 16 years later his final piano trio, the “Archduke”, epitomizes the breadth and warmth of Beethoven's Heroic Period. Rachmaninoff's youthful trio of 1892, at age 19, already shows in the virtuoso piano part his ability to evoke a wide spectrum of sound colors.

Formed in 1999, the Amelia Piano Trio was presented in Carnegie Hall debut in 2000 by their mentor Isaac Stern. Known for their charismatic and extroverted performances, they’ve been NPR Ensemble in- residence, and are now based in Oregon. “[The Amelia's] ...careful attention to balance, tonal beauty, and teamwork was exemplary.” - Strad Magazine; “Together they make music that is daring, lively and completely engrossing.” - The Seattle Times

G.S. Sachdev, Indian flute and Swapan Chaudhuri, tabla

G.S. Sachdev is recognized worldwide as one of the premier performers of the bansuri, the traditional Indian flute. The depth of emotion he evokes from a simple length of bamboo is truly awe-inspiring. This music is handed down from master to student, generation to generation. With Sachdev's superb technical artistry, powerful devotion to the Indian Classical idiom and profound love for his instrument, he has carved out a place for the bansuri as a beautiful exponent of Indian music.

Sachdev takes the listener with him on a highly personal and reflective journey of improvisation in Indian classical music that transcends all geographic boundaries of musical origin and style, and touches to the very core of universal musical expression.

Swapan Chaudhuri started learning tabla at the age of five. He bases his style on the intensive training he received from his Guru, the late Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas of Calcutta, the eminent exponent of the Lucknow Gharana.

Chaudhuri's music is the spontaneous expression of his powerful emotions and his deep knowledge of tabla. It is undoubtedly through his clarity and elegance of performance, both as an accompanist and as a soloist, that he has achieved such notoriety throughout the world as a true master of tabla.

The Coulter/Phillips Ensemble

The Coulter/Phillips Ensemble is an instrumental ensemble from Santa Cruz, CA, which performs traditional folk music from the Celtic, Scandinavian, and American folk music traditions. The group plays guitar, cello, flute, harp, oboe, English horn, and tabla. All members of the CPE have classical training on their instruments and apply that training to their vituosic performances and chamber music style arrangements of traditional folk music.

The tunes range from poignant slow airs to rip roaring jigs and reels to contemplative Shaker hymns. The group has been working together since 1983, where they met while at the University of California Santa Cruz. In 1985 they released their first album, Orison, and have since released over 20 more albums with Gourd music, a local independent label.

The core group, William Coulter, Barry Phillips, and Shelley Phillips, all attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music together and received masters degrees in music. Besides continuing to make music, William and Barry are recording engineers, and Shelley founded the Community Music School of Santa Cruz. All of the members teach at music festivals every summer; they have performed in Ireland, Taiwan, Germany, and all over the US.

SALON CLASSIQUE in Forest Hill

The Savor of Chamber Music

Kindly hosted by

Phil & Sally Kipper and Michael & Anna Bolechowski

Some of the finest chamber musicians of the Bay Area will perform a special program for strings that features the double bass, a rare guest to the chamber music repertoire. Bassist Charles Chandler from the SF Symphony is joined by his colleagues Katie Kadarauch, violin, David Kim, viola, and Angela Lee, cellist of The Lee Trio. Karsten Windt, former violinist of the Deutsche Symphony Berlin and founding director of SALON CLASSIQUE, will provide entertaining introductions with examples of the music.

The concert opens with the Divertimento in E flat for Viola, Cello and Bass, a hidden treasure by Joseph Haydn‘s brother Michael of Salzburg, Austria, who was a dear friend of Mozart. It will be followed by Rossini‘s joyful Duetto for Cello and Double Bass, which delightfully displays the spirit of the Italian opera, and the glorious second String Quintet Op. 77 by Czech composer Antonin Dvorák. The audience will be seated in close circles around the musicians in the beautiful and historic Bernard Maybeck designed Forest Hill Club House.

Ives Quartet : Spring Concert Series

Mozart String Quartet in D Major, K. 575

Hoping for the same favor Haydn had in dedicating Op. 50 to the King of Prussia, Mozart set out to compose a set for him, and this is the first of three he completed. The cello part is particularly prominent since the King was a fine amateur cellist.

Lurie String Quartet commission Many times IQ has speculated, “Wouldn’t it be great if that wonderful composer of musicals, popular music or film scores had written a string quartet?” Now awardwinning Hollywood composer, arranger, and Palo Alto native, Deborah Lurie, has been asked to do just that with support from the Argosy Foundation.

Debussy String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10

Debussy was becoming Debussy in 1893 when he composed his first and only string quartet. While still adhering to fairly traditional forms, he was developing new, scintillating sonorities that became known as “Impressionism.”

The Pacific Exchange 2012

The Pacific Exchange brings composers and performers from diverse areas of the Pacific Rim together in order to exchange ideas and create music on a shared concert stage. Thingamajigs created this event to emphasize the commonalities of artists living on the Pacific Rim, as well as to showcase their diversity. We ask artists, ‘what does the Pacific Rim mean to you and how does it affect your music’. Thingamajigs, with composers and performers from Seattle, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, will host concerts, workshops, and demonstrations to foster an exchange of ideas with the local community.

Along with our Pacific Exchange concert at the Meridian Gallery, Thingamajigs will be in residence at the Oakland Museum of California for three weeks to offer interactive concerts of music created with objects from the museum’s collection. These reinterpretations of objects into performance will stimulate innovation and creativity for all ages.

Artists and groups involved in this year’s Pacific Exchange events include Paul Kikuchi (Seattle) and Tide Tables, Tatsuya Nakatani (Japan) and the Thingamajigs Performance Group (Oakland).
