Main Stage Concert #2: I Like Ludwig

I like Ludwig—don’t you? Join us as we ring in the New Year with music of Ludwig van Beethoven. His Second Symphony shocked contemporary audiences in 1802; one critic called it “a hideously writhing, wounded dragon that refuses to die.” Nor was Beethoven’s Violin Concerto popular at first, but these two youthful compositions were groundbreaking works of incredible genius. Robin Sharp, the SFCO’s brilliant concertmaster, is our featured soloist.

Shuffle. Play. Listen. feat. Christopher O'Riley and Matt Haimovitz

Pianist Christopher O’Riley and cellist Matt Haimovitz join together to explore the lyrical and virtuosic properties of their instruments in a collaboration that crosses in and out of the classical and pop music genres. The program showcases their talents as collaborators and soloists, defining what it means to be an artist in the 21st Century. Audiences will hear works by Bach and Gabrielli, Radiohead and Arcade Fire, Piazzolla and Stravinsky. A double CD recording of the program, as well as new repertoire, will be released in late 2011.

Christopher O’Riley is recognized as one of the leading American pianists of his generation, touring extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician and appearing with every major orchestra. He hosts the popular NPR music program, From the Top, and has released a set of highly regarded recordings of the music of Radiohead, Nick Drake, and others. Mr. O’Riley studied with Russell Sherman at the New England Conservatory of Music.

Matt Haimovitz made his debut at the age of 13 as a soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Isreal Philharmonic. By age 17, he made his first recording for Deutsche Grammophon with James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has re-defined what it means to be a classical musician today, bringing concerts of Bach, Golijov, and others to clubs and coffee houses across the country while maintaining a busy schedule of international appearances.

The first half of Shuffle.Play.Listen. will be pre-arranged. The second half of the concert will be programmed from the stage giving the artists the opportunity to share the context of the program, and allowing the music to flow seamlessly from one genre to the next.

Jupiter Chamber Players

In 1997, two veteran freelancers, violinist Michael Jones and Juilliard-trained violist Steve Levintow, recruited BBC Orchestra violinist Andrew Davies and cellist Paul Hale of the Oakland Symphony to found the Jupiter Chamber Players. The group had the good fortune to connect with Marvin Sanders, director of Live Oak Concerts at the Berkeley Art Center, just as the Center's previous ensemble-in-residence, the Cypress Quartet, left to launch their international career. The Art Center remained the Jupiter's "home" venue for 10 years. Paul Rhodes replaced Hale in 2000, bringing his years of experience in numerous orchestras and as soloist with the Carmel Bach Festival. Two years later, Davies left to pursue other projects, and San Francisco Symphony member Victor Romasevich took over as first violinist. Romasevich brought deep fascination with Russian chamber music, including masterworks by such composers as Sergei Taneyev, Georgy Catoire, and Iosif Andriasov (with whom Romasevich studied violin and viola) - all links in a tradition going back to Tchaikovsky through the Moscow Conservatory. The Jupiter Chamber Players take pleasure in introducing wider audiences to the work of these composers, while continuing also to present more familiar Russian and European repertoire. For information about composer and philosopher Iosif Andriasov, please visit www.andriasovstore.com. www.iosifandriasov.net © Marta Andriasova (Kudryashova) For recordings/videos of Iosif Andriasov's music, please go to YouTube and search for 'Iosif Andriasov'.

Alla Zingarese: A Winter Music Festival Inspired by Eastern European Dances

A lively January concert of dance music written by great classical composers promises to lift the winter blues for concertgoers in the Santa Cruz Chamber Players’ third offering of the season. The concert will take place in Aptos on January 21st and 22nd, and includes works by Antonin Dvorak, Johannes Brahms, Bela Bartok and Fritz Kreisler.

Dances will be featured in the first half of the program. Mr. Scarfe and Roy Malan will play two works by Kreisler: La Gitana and Slavonic Fantasy. Trio arrangements include the Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 6, a virtuosic piece for the violin, and two of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, which Mr. Scarfe describes as having “a more rhapsodic tinge.” Bartok's Six Romanian Folk Dances (arranged for violin and piano) will, as Mr. Scarfe relates, be “infused with 20th-century harmonies.”

In the second half of the program, the ensemble will perform Dvorak's chamber music masterpiece, the Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81 (1887). According to Mr. Scarfe, “This is one of Dvorak's most popular works, and is composed on a symphonic scale. The middle movements are given the titles of two of Dvorak's favorite dances, the “Dumka” and the “Furiant”, and, even in the outer movements, the spirit of the dance is always present – the last movement is a rollicking polka.”

Double Trouble: Two High Energy Duos in Concert

Two high-energy, completely unique duos will be spotlighted on this concert. The Living Earth Show performs commissioned compositions for guitar and percussion that draw on its members’ diverse musical backgrounds performing rock, Celtic, jazz, and Polynesian music. Sqwonk is a dynamic and adventurous bass clarinet duo devoted to exploring the full expressive range of the bass clarinet, from deep resonances to raucous wails. While grounded in the classical tradition, Sqwonk’s music draws on a wide range of influences, from klezmer to heavy metal to blues to minimalism to free improvisation, creating a repertoire that is strikingly contemporary, yet broadly accessible to a wide audience.

We believe that every memorable chamber opera should begin with a great chamber music concert! Be among the first to hear Theotokia, a song cycle for string quartet, piano, and voice comprising pivotal dramatic sections of composer Jonathan Berger’s forthcoming chamber opera, Three Christs of Ypsilanti. Premiering at Bing Concert Hall in 2013, Three Christs is based on Dan O’Brien’s eponymous play about a psychiatrist with three patients who all believe they are Jesus Christ.
