The concert includes my collection from this year…a sequence of [5] 4 minute pieces called French Café Suite. It's the first time that I've put the piano with the didjeridu." Trio Brillante
BERKELEY CHAMBER PERFORMANCES FEATURES TRIO BRILLANTE ON SEPTEMBER 14 Berkeley Chamber Performances (BCP) opens its 18th season with one of the Bay Area’s newest and most exciting ensembles, TRIO BRILLANTE. Featuring classical treasures by Glinka, Francaix, Mendelssohn, and Mozart, the TRIO performs on Tuesday, September 14, at 8 p.m. at the Berkeley City Club. Audience members are invited to attend a complementary wine and cheese reception following the concert with an opportunity to meet and talk with the musicians.
The program begins with Trio Pathetique in D minor by Mikhail Glinka. Completed in the late 1820s, and originally written in the Romantic style for clarinet, bassoon, and piano, the trio incorporates Russian folk melodies. An exciting finale filled with running triplets follows the third or Largo movement, which is especially expressive of the “pathetique” mood.
Next on the program is a comtemporary piece by Jean Francaix written in 1990 and simply called Trio. A profile French composer who wrote ballet music, operas, and many chamber pieces, Francaix was also an accomplished pianist known for performing his own works as well as those by Poulenc and other of his contemporaries.
Following intermission, TRIO BRILLANTE will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Concert Piece, No I, in F minor, Op. 113. Mendelssohn wrote the trio after meeting clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Baermann, who played in the first performance of the piece, along with his son Carl --and with the composer on the piano. The concert concludes with Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio. This well-known and lovely trio, written in 1786, was the first piece of music written for the instrumental combination of clarinet, viola, and piano

Classical Revolution presents the Vinca Quartet: An intimate evening of chamber music at the Red Poppy
Praised for their “stunning” musicianship (New York Times) and their “performances to remember” (Woodstock Times), the Vinca Quartet has consistently won over the hearts of audiences and critics alike through their dynamic interpretations, innovative programming and enduring passion for chamber music.
Strongly committed to inspiring new audiences and strengthening communities through their dedication to chamber music, the Vinca Quartet has helped launch multiple in-depth concert series serving communities overlooked by major classical groups. In 2010, they were selected as Quartet-in-Residence for the ProQuartet International Odyssée Program, spending a month performing, attending master classes and researching musical education systems across France. For the 2010-11 season, they will serve as the resident artists for the Perlman/Suncoast music program, bringing music education, mentoring, coaching and guidance to students in Florida. In 2007-08, the quartet took part in establishing Music Haven, a tuition-free strings and mentorship program devoted to transforming the lives of urban youth and their families through music in New Haven, CT. Other ongoing collaborative work includes exploring parallels between music and science with the Hertz Foundation, an organization aimed at nurturing remarkable applied scientists and engineers who show the most promise to change the world.
“To us, chamber music is a metaphor for the teamwork and community that defines human relationships at their best. We seek to share our love of music and our creative spirit with our audiences as openly and freely as possible, to inspire and impassion audiences of all ages and experience and to change peoples' lives through music. We strive to find innovative ways to make our art form understood by our current society by humanizing the concert experience.” –Vinca Quartet

Thomas Schultz
Sea Wind by Hyo-shin Na; Deutsche Tänze, Wanderer Fantasie and Sonata in B flat, D. 960 by Franz Schubert.

Praised by San Francisco Chronicle music critic Joshua Kosman for his "strong, fearless execution," "depth of feeling," and "fiery elegance and formal command", Thomas Schultz has established an international reputation both as an interpreter of music from the classical tradition—particularly Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt—and as one of the leading exponents of the music of our time. Rudhyar in Retrospect
Dane Rudhyar (1895–1985) was a unique figure in 20th-century American culture: a composer, thinker, painter, poet, novelist, and the pre-eminent figure in astrology. Rudhyar was American modernism's proto-multiculturalist. He connected dissonance to his studies in comparative religion, theosophy, and metaphysics, was a leader and mentor to fellow composers Henry Cowell, Ruth Crawford Seeger and Carl Ruggles, and later influenced a new generation including John Cage, Lou Harrison, James Tenney, and Kyle Gann.
Now, 25 years after Rudhyar's death (September 13, 1985 in San Francisco), Other Minds presents a celebration of the work of this "seed man" of the avant-garde, with performers David Abel and Julie Steinberg (violin and piano), Sarah Cahill (piano), and the Ives Quartet. The September 27 program will also include a pre-concert panel discussion with the composer's widow Leyla Rudhyar Hill, and biographer Deniz Ertan (University of Nottingham), moderated by Other Minds Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian. A special exhibition of Rudhyar's paintings, manuscripts, and correspondence will be displayed at both concerts.
Concert Program (same for both dates): Poem for Violin and Piano (1920) Works for solo piano: Transmutation, tone sequence in seven movements (1976) Stars from Pentagram No. 3 (1925) Granites (1929) Crisis & Overcoming (String Quartet No. 2) (1979)
