Sundays @ Four: Classical Revolution
Crowden presents chamber music to the public with Sundays @ Four, our series of low-cost, informal concerts featuring distinguished chamber musicians. Artists speak about each work and share their personal observations and inspirations in these intimate concerts, then mingle with the audience in receptions after the performance.
Classical Revolution was formed in November 2006 as a weekly social gathering place for chamber musicians to greet and read quartets together. Word spread quickly and Classical Rev chapters began springing up all over the world, in places as exotic as Philadelphia, Madison, Belgrade, Banff, Berlin, Melbourne, DC, Cleveland, Ann Arbor, New York, Portland, and Pittsburgh. Since its inception, the San Francisco chapter has presented over 400 chamber music events, mostly free to the public, with more than 500 participating musicians.
Revolution Quartet is Classical Revolution's ensemble in residence, a rotating group that performs music from Bartok and Beethoven to collaborations with jazz pianist Weber Iago and local songstress Meklit Hadero. A 2009 residency at Red Poppy Art House was followed by a 2010 residency at the Legion of Honor's Rodin Gallery.

Awakening: A Meditation on 9/11: Kronos Quartet with Cantabile Youth Singers
The inimitable Kronos Quartet launches the Lively Arts season with a program reflecting the sense of inquiry, compassion, and musical citizenry that have long been hallmarks of these Grammy-winners. About this special program, Kronos’ Artistic Director David Harrington writes:
“Most of us carry within ourselves an alarming movie replaying the events of September 11, 2001. Kronos offers a new soundtrack to this internal movie. We move from various public musical places to those that are particular, and mostly private. We have assembled this concert using a wide range of sonic building blocks from 12 countries. Using this musical diversity as a tool, we want to open windows on an expansive interior place, a place where we can be surrounded by a wealth of musical perspectives. We hope to create equilibrium in the midst of imbalance: a special covering on an open wound. We also hope to find a location that one’s inner ear can return to whenever the alarming movie from that horrific day replays itself.“
PROGRAM
Works by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky (Uzbekistan), Ram Narayan (India), Einstürzende Neubauten (Germany), John Oswald (Canada), Michael Gordon (United States), Osvaldo Golijov (Argentina), Terry Riley (United States), Aulis Sallinen (Finland), Vladimir Martynov (Russia); arrangements of traditional works from Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Sweden.

Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile
“This top shelf acoustic quintet is a virtuosic revelation.” —The Boston Globe
Collecting five singular abilities and viewpoints into one musical force, Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile have established their place among the most dynamic and talented ensembles across the full range of contemporary music-making. The line-up includes some of the most impressive and widely respected musicians performing today: Chris Eldridge (guitar), Paul Kowert (bass), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Chris Thile (mandolin and lead vocals), and Gabe Witcher (fiddle).
The group appears at Stanford on the heels of a new CD, Antifogmatic. Thile notes, “Antifogmatic is an old term for a bracing beverage, generally rum or whiskey, that a person would have before going out to work in rough weather to stave off any ill effects. This batch of tunes could be used in much the same way, and includes some characters who would probably benefit mightily, if temporarily, from a good antifogmatic.”

String Quartet Century
The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble opens the 2010-2011 season with a concert titled "String Quartet Century" featuring a string quartet masterpiece of the 20th century by the influential Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, alongside two American works -- the world premiere of a new quartet by award-winning American composer Carl Schimmel, and a piece by the celebrated minimalist Terry Riley. Written over the course of a century, each of these three intricate works inhabits an expressive world of its own and celebrates the ‘string quartet’ in distinctive ways. Bartók’s Second String Quartet, composed in 1917, is the centerpiece of the program. “In the three movements of this quartet, Bartók illustrates music’s power to sing, dance, mourn, celebrate and speak, sometimes creating an infectious feeling of momentum, and at others a devastating understanding of loss,” explains Anna Presler, Artistic Director, LCCE. Carl Schimmel’s new piece composed for the string quartet offers both humor and tenderness to create an appealing new music; and Terry Riley’s minimalist G Song, written in 1980, creates a romantic minimalist sound.
