Rothko Chapel Friday, November 5, 7:30 p.m.
Programmed by Sarah Cahill
The UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus, directed by Marika Kuzma, and the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio perform Morton Feldman’s affecting, meditative masterpiece Rothko Chapel, in the resonant architecture of the Berkeley Art Museum. The reflective, elegiac mood is continued and enhanced by performances of Robert Ashley’s choral work She Was a Visitor, Lou Harrison’s gamelan composition Threnody for Carlos Chávez, and Roscoe Mitchell’s monument for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Bells for New Orleans.
L@TE: Friday Nights @ BAM/PFA From meditative masterpieces to off-kilter performances, L@TE programming invades Gallery B with classical and experimental soundworks, dance, video, and conceptual and performance art. In conjunction with Radical Light, Radical L@TE recreates a 1975 performance and brings us up to the present with video-mediated cross-dressing and travel films made for plants.

Bang On A Can All-Stars: Works by Louis Andriessen, Marijke van Warmerdam and David Lang
A rare West Coast premiere of a newly minted piece by the eminent Dutch composer Louis Andriessen—fresh from its Carnegie Hall debut last season. And with it, a recent work, sunray, by David Lang—Stanford alumnus, winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music, former Andriessen student, and co-founder of Bang on a Can.
With evident creative affinity for the clarity and vigor of work by Stravinsky, Mondrian, and bebop composers, Andriessen’s musical palette is edgy and bright. His new collaboration with Marijke van Warmerdam, who has created the video for Life, is a continuation of work with other filmmakers, notably Peter Greenaway.
David Lang’s music embraces and extends Andriessen’s kinetic quality and virtuoso writing, with an emotional urgency and beauty that have established him as an important figure—composer, collaborator, educator—on the international arts scene. The program is quintessential Bang on a Can All-Stars—the unparalleled ensemble that can, and will, tackle it all.
PROGRAM
Julia Wolfe: Big Beautiful Dark and Scary; Fred Frith: Snakes and Ladders; Louis Andriessen: Life, with video by Marijke Van Warmerdam; David Lang: sunray; Brian Eno: Music for Airports 2/2; Michael Nyman: Manhatta, with film by Paul Strand (arr. Andy Keenan)

Contemporary Insights: Music and Conversation
The ensemble revisits a piece of its history at the opening of its 40th Anniversary Season. Co-commissioned by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players in 1988, Seven is part of Cage’s series of numbered works that explore the fixed and flexible aspects of time. In this unconventional piece, each musician reads from a different set of time-brackets, most of which are flexible in their length. Instead of a conductor, the musicians use stopwatches to guide their progress through the piece. The piece will be presented along with an open dialogue between the artists and the audience. The audience is invited to stay for wine and hors d’oeuvres after the performance.

Christian McBride & Inside Straight
“An effortlessly charismatic bassist” —The New York Times
In this latest Lively Arts performance—following on last season’s sold-out tribute to Herbie Hancock—DownBeat 2009 Readers Poll–winning bassist Christian McBride returns at the helm of his acclaimed acoustic ensemble, Inside Straight. As on the group’s 2009 debut disc, Kind of Brown, McBride is joined in this night of “hard swing-to-bluesy groove tunes” by some of the most in-demand players on the scene today: alto and soprano saxman Steve Wilson, vibist Warren Wolf, Jr., pianist Eric Reed, and drummer Carl Allen.
As The New York Times wrote in a glowing review of the group’s 2007 performance debut at New York’s legendary Village Vanguard: “When the bassist Christian McBride feels good about a groove, he savors it, exults in it. Flashing a million-watt smile, he tosses off frolicsome micro-elaborations….Watching his sidemen respond to him, you’re almost tempted to pose a question: Why doesn’t every jazz combo seem to be having such a good time?”

Saturday, November 13, 2010 – 8pm Chiara String Quartet with West Coast Premiere of Milagros
Occidental, CA —At 8pm on Saturday, November 13, 2010, the Chiara String Quartet (Rebecca Fischer and Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; and Gregory Beaver, cello) will perform at the Occidental Center for the Arts (4008 Bohemian Highway), presented by the Redwood Arts Council. The concert features the West Coast premiere of Milagros (Miracles), a new work commissioned by the Chiara Quartet with support from Meet The Composer from composer Gabriela Lena Frank. The program also includes two works by Beethoven – his String Quartet in G Major, Op. 18 No. 2, and String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131.
Gabriela Lena Frank is one of the country’s leading younger composers, and a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship winner. Identity has always been at the center of Frank's music. Born in Berkeley, California to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Frank explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera, Frank is something of a musical anthropologist. She has travelled extensively throughout South America and her pieces reflect and refract her studies of Latin-American folklore, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. Milagros is inspired by the sounds and personalities of Andean lands, and is a celebration of the 10 years of mutual growth that Frank and the Chiara Quartet have enjoyed together.

Midori, violin, with Robert McDonald, piano
An artist and musical citizen of uncompromising integrity, Midori has established herself as a formidable performer, educator, entrepreneur, and arts leader. Devoting considerable time and personal resources to arts education in the US and abroad, Midori has brought special visibility and notable impact with community initiatives directed at replenishing hands-on music-making in the public schools. She has also been an important advocate for music of our time, spearheading commissions and widely performing new works.
In this intimate Lively Arts performance, accompanied on piano by longtime collaborator Robert McDonald, Midori continues her approach in recent years of balancing mainstays of the repertoire—here, sonatas by Bach, Mozart, and Bartók—with less frequently performed works from the 20th and 21st centuries. In this latter category, Midori considers two very different approaches to the nocturne: Szymanowski’s stately Nocturne and Tarantella for Violin and Piano (1915) and George Crumb’s haunting and texturally expansive Four Nocturnes (Night Music II) of 1964.
