Calefax
A sound you’ve never heard before! It’s taken us years to book this extraordinary reed quintet from Amsterdam, which has been called “a classical ensemble with a pop mentality.” These free-spirited virtuosos, whose ability on their instruments ranks with the world’s best, have pioneered a unique path; not only have they invented their own ensemble (oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, bass clarinet) but they transcribe their own wide-ranging repertoire, commission new works, and always thrill their audiences.

Earplay 25: Ports and Portals
Earplay concludes its 25th concert season with Earplay 25: Ports and Portals with more innovation from the Bay Area. In response to the Bay Area's cultural diversity, many of the works are by composers born outside the U.S. Earplay commissioned Hyo-shin Na who composed Song of One Lost in the Fog, a work that bridges California Native American, East Asian and Western cultures. Written for the entire ensemble plus the Japanese koto and guest artist Shoko Hikage, the work gives each of the cultures a distinct voice within the larger composition inspired by Native American music. The program continues with guitar, another plucked instrument, featured in the late Jorge Liderman’s vibrant and rhythmic Swirling Streams for guitar, bass clarinet, and string trio that Earplay premiered in 2004 and later recorded with guest artist David Tanenbaum. More works from the Bay Area include a west coast premiere of Scherzo for Mixed Quartet by Wayne Peterson. Terâneler (2006); the 2009 Aird composition winner by Tolga Yayalar, a Turkish native studying at Harvard University concludes the season.
