Berkeley Chamber Performances (BCP) opens its 17th season of intimate chamber concerts with the virtuosic quartet, CLARINET THING, on Tuesday, September 29, at 8 p.m. at the Berkeley City Club.  The cutting edge program features works from the quartet’s upcoming CD release, including tunes by Thelonious Monk, Carla Bley, and Dizzy Gillespie, along with original compositions by members of the ensemble.   Founded and led by award-winning composer/performer Beth Custer, CLARINET THING was hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle for its “startlingly beautiful music.” Audience members are invited to attend a complementary wine and cheese reception following the concert with an opportunity to meet and talk with the musicians.

Jassen Todorov, violin, and William Corbett-Jones, piano

Associate Professor Jassen Todorov is director of the SF State SF State School of Music and Dance. His accomplishments include winning a 2006 Crystal Lyre Award, the highest honor for achievement in music and dance in his native Bulgaria. At age 26, he became the youngest musician to record all six violin sonatas of Eugene Ysaye, a Belgian composer and violinist known for his difficult compositions and fiery individualism as a player. Todorov has also recorded Brahms’ three violin sonatas.
