ZOFO [20FingerOrchestra] and The George Hurd Ensemble

ZOFO [20FingerOrchestra] plays music by Brahms, Piazzolla, and Harold Shapero

ZOFO is the San Francisco-based musical partnership of pianists Keisuke Nakagoshi and Eva-Maria Zimmermann. As one of only a few ensembles worldwide focusing on piano duets, ZOFO is reviving hidden gems of the one-piano-four-hands repertoire along with a strong emphasis on performing 20th and 21st Century music. By also playing arrangements of famous orchestral pieces, ZOFO explores the realm that many composers first experienced their symphonic works.
ZOFO believes that the piano duet is the most intimate form of chamber music, with the two performers playing synchronized interwoven lines on one instrument. The choreography of the four hands is as beautiful to watch as the rich tapestry of sounds dancing out of the piano.
ZOFO is deeply committed to enrich the piano duet repertoire by commissioning new works each year.
ZOFO is a fiscally sponsored Affiliate of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music.

Terry Riley, Pipe Dreams

Performance 9 p.m.
Book launch 7 p.m.
Doors 5 p.m.

Composer/pianist Terry Riley returns to BAM/PFA after some 35 years for a rare solo piano performance, his uniquely expansive sound reverberating for hours through the museum. (Audience members are invited to bring cushions, blankets and sleeping bags to make themselves comfortable on the gallery floor; limited chair seating also will be available.) Riley is a UC Berkeley alumnus, best known for pioneering the minimalist movement in music with his 1964 composition In C. He has studied Indian classical music with Pandit Pran Nath, explored jazz with Chet Baker and reinvigorated the string quartet ensemble via his collaborations with the Kronos Quartet. Along the way, his enormously influential music has inspired generations of composers around the world and provided the creative spark for rock bands such as Can and the Velvet Underground.

A book launch for MATRIX/Berkeley: A Changing Exhibition of Contemporary Art precedes the performance at 7 p.m. Created in collaboration with the award-winning design firm Project Projects, this new book chronicles the 30-year history of the MATRIX Program for Contemporary Art through a collage of archival materials and interviews.

Cypress String Quartet: Dvorak "American" Quartet Op. 96

The Cypress String Quartet returns to Montalvo for its popular Salon Series. As part of the overall Villa Chamber Music Series, the Cypress present one of the most unique concert formats. Rather than a traditional classical chamber music concert of three works with an intermission, the Cypress features one work that the group discusses in depth and performs. The quartet contextualizes the featured piece through musical examples, discussion and performances of additional single movements or short works. They then follow this explanation with a performance of the featured piece in its entirety. During the performance, the audience has the opportunity to develop an intimate relationship with the featured music as well as with the performers through their explanations. Past audience members have commented that it’s a unique concert experience that demystifies classical music and offers insight into the creative process.

Tuned In: An evening of eclectic performances benefitting the San Francisco Conservatory of Music

On Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m., three stunning concert halls at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music will be turned over to an extraordinary, genre-bending lineup of local favorites and SFCM grads, faculty, and friends -- all in the name of benefitting current scholarship students at the Conservatory.

Called TUNED IN, this first annual benefit concert aims to showcase the wide variety of genres in which classically trained musicians often work. While many San Francisco Conservatory students go straight to the top of the classical music world, others leave the old masters behind and thrive on the cutting edge of indie rock, jazz, bluegrass, ambient and alternative classical.

Performers will include The Magik*Magik Orchestra, an alternative orchestra known internationally for its collaborations with Sting, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and indie savant John Vanderslice; indie rock innovators Birds and Batteries; and prize-winning bluegrass virtuosos 49 Special, along with many others.

In the mood for food presents violinist/composer Cornelius Dufallo of ETHEL and composer/saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh

On Saturday November 14 at 7:30 PM  Philip Gelb, West Oakland's master of aural-gustatory synesthesia, presents yet another fascinating evening of music and food. New York violinist and composer Cornelius Dufallo performs music from his recently released album,  Dream Streets. Time Out New York describes Dream Streets as "a beautiful, evocative disc of electroacoustic soundscapes... all [of which] serve as apt reminders of this vital artist's considerable gifts." Dufallo is currently director of the new music ensemble Ne(x)tworks and has been a violinist in ETHEL since 2005. Also on the program is local saxophonist and composer  Hafez Modirzadeh , whose fresh, original approach to cross-cultural collaboration has earned him multiple NEA Jazz Fellowships as well as an Artist-in Residence Grant from the California Arts Council. Modirzadeh's playing is deeply rooted in the legacy of African-American musical traditions, yet is also compelled by his Persian heritage. In addition to their solo work, Dufallo and Modirzadeh collaborate in a new project that crosses the boundaries of genre and culture. Mr. Gelb provides a four course vegan meal for the audience to enjoy.

Concert featuring classical pianist Eric Himy

Concert pianist Eric Himy's performances have been described by the New York Times as "flawlessly poised, elegant and brilliant."

In 2008, Himy was invited by the Bernstein family to celebrate the 90th anniversary tribute concert to Leonard Bernstein at the Lukas Foss Music Festival in the Hamptons. He has played since age 6 and was performing concerti by age 15. He received a Master of Music degree from Juilliard School. Himy has won the Gold Medal at the 1988 World Piano Competition, the Kosciuszko Chopin Prize in New York and the Milosz Magin International Competition in Paris. A champion of contemporary composers, Mr. Himy commissioned Gargoyles by the American composer Lowell Liebermann  and played its world premiere at his debut recital in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall.

Bolcom Meets Strauss

This program features music that is at once modern, elegant, and beautiful. New Century Chamber Orchestra's 2009-2010 Featured Composer William Bolcom is one of American’s most dynamic, prolific musical geniuses whose huge and varied oeuvre defies categorization. Bolcom is deeply rooted in the American tradition of rags and ragtime, but his voice includes a variety of influences from the rich traditions of the 20th century. Richard Strauss’ heart-wrenching and elegiac Metamorphosen, a modern string orchestra masterpiece, powerfully demonstrates music’s ability to capture a moment in time – in this case, the bombing of the Munich opera house.

Two Russian Masterworks

The Jupiter Quartet, led by Victor Romasevich, presents two great Second Quartets: Tchaikovsky's, and Prokofiev's. Seldom heard in Bay Area halls, these works show less-appreciated aspects of each composer's range: a deep familiarity with the folk music of the Caucasus region, in Prokofiev's case, and in Tchaikovsky an understated lyricism, especially in the quiet, moonlit scherzo, written in D-flat major and in a lilting compound meter. For those who love chamber music, these are two rare treats.
