TAGI Ensemble presented by the Mill Valley Chamber Music Society

The Mill Valley Chamber Music Society presents the innovative TAGI Ensemble, Feb. 8 in Mill Valley.

Very few other groups combine piano, violin, clarinet and cell. This unique instrumentation enables this ensemble to be extremely flexible in their repertoire and allows the group to perform classical and contemporary music, presenting trios, duos and even solo pieces with equal aplomb.

Formerly known as New York Lyric Chamber Players, TAGI takes its name from its three Russian musicians: Tatiana Goncharova, piano; Grigory Kalinovsky, violin; and Igor Begelman, clarinet. The group also features cellist Sophie Shao, a native of Houston, Texas.

For its Mill Valley Feb. 8 performance TAGI Ensemble performs Faure-Violin Sonata #1 in A Major; Schoenfield-Trio for Violin, Clarinet and Piano; Shostakovich-Trio #1 op. 8; Brahms-Trio in A minor, op.114

ChamberBridge:
Lara Bruckmann, soprano, and Eva-Maria Zimmermann, piano

The program opens with Five Poemes Chinois, settings by Albert Roussel of ancient Chinese poems translated into French.  L’Ame en bourgeon, by Mei-Fang Lin, a piece commissioned by ChamberBridge, on poems by Olivier Messiaen’s mother, Cecile Sauvage follows.  Excerpts of Harawi, using Messiaen’s own texts inspired by Quetcha words, are also included in the program.  A love-death themed song cycle partially in French, Harawi also draws from the language of Peruvian Indians. Following intermission, Zimmermann will perform Samuel Barber’s Excursions, Op.20.  Other works offered by the ChamberBridge duo included a setting by Mark Winges of German poems translated into English, a commissioned song by Gabriela Lena Frank, and excerpts of Hugo Wolf’s Italian Liederbuch.
