Call and Response 2009: 10th Anniversary!

Each year, the Cypress String Quartet selects two works from the standard quartet repertoire and commissions (the “call”) a third work (the “response”) based on inspiration from the two older works. By integrating the new music with the familiar, Call & Response explores how newly composed music weaves older works into its sounds, while reflecting trends and ideas of current times—a new composition is born!

American String Quartet with Menahem Pressler, piano

The American String Quartet, longtime quartet-in-residence at the Manhattan School of Music, has made relatively few recordings (and those mostly for small labels), and it’s likely that most Bay Area chamber music lovers are unfamiliar with it. Those who have heard the ensemble, though, will remember the sinew in the sound, the acuity of the articulation, and especially the warmth and individuality of the group’s inner players, second violinist Laurie Carney and violist Daniel Avshalomov.

Alexander String Quartet with Robert Greenberg Lecturer - Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn would have turned 200 years-old in 2009, and we (along with a few of Mendelssohn’s other great friends) have put together a season of chamber music to celebrate the occasion. Mendelssohn was the most precocious composer this side of Mozart, a fact that stands revealed by our opening work, the miraculous Octet for Strings, composed when he was 16 years old. The season concludes with his gut-wrenching, heart-breaking String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80, dedicated to the memory of his beloved sister Fanny and composed just months before his own death.

Felici Trio

Felici Trio is a vibrant group that has performed over 350 concerts in Europe, South America and the United States and has distinguished itself with a unique presence on the national music scene since coming to Mammoth Lakes in 1998 as grantee of Chamber Music America’s Rural Residencies Program and California Arts Council's Touring Roster ensemble. Music Before 1850 - Quatuor Mosaïques

For those who know the quartet through its recordings — more than 20 years’ worth, spanning Haydn, Mozart, and early Beethoven, and stretching forward to Schubert and Mendelssohn — this first Bay Area visit by the Quatuor Mosaïques needs no recommending. But those who haven’t heard the ensemble yet are in for an uncommon pleasure. I could wish that the players (who met as members of Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s Concentus Musicus Wien) were bringing some of their more far-flung recent repertoire; lately they’ve been playing music as late as Bartók and Webern.
