Stanford Lively Arts
James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues"

Word for Word Performing Arts Company presents a staged reading of “Sonny’s Blues,” a story of brotherhood from the great American storyteller James Baldwin. Two brothers in 1950s Harlem—the elder a schoolteacher and family man; the younger a jazz pianist with a troubled past—navigate a tense and complicated relationship against the jazzy rhythmic background of city life. The original musical score is composed by the highly regarded, Bay Area–based bassist/composer Marcus Shelby, who also concludes the evening with a live performance with his quintet.
