Stanford Lively Arts:
Pacifica Quartet

Celebrating the 100th birthday of Elliott Carter—long considered a “dean” of American composers—the Pacifica performs his String Quartet No. 5, which captures the sense of dialogue and collegiality of a chamber music rehearsal. Carter’s work is juxtaposed with Smetana’s tragic, autobiographical Quartet in E Minor, “From My Life,” and Beethoven’s playful Quartet No. 2 in G Major, op. 18.

Cypress String Quartet

Spiritual. Continuing their discussion of the "Late Beethoven" quartets, the Cypress turns its attention and virtuoso skills to the composer's String Quartet Op. 132 in A minor. Completed in July 1825, this transcendent composition embodies the range of turmoil and emotion experienced by an aging composer struggling with ill health, loneliness, financial loss, and most profoundly, deafness. Members enjoy an informal reception after the concert. Historic Villa.

Kronos Quartet: Sun Rings

Sun Rings—the longtime collaboration between the Kronos Quartet and composer Terry Riley, the father of the minimalist movement—brings the sights and sounds of the heavens to vivid, multimedia life. Co-commissioned by NASA, this evening-length work of 10 “spacescapes” includes sounds harvested from the farthest reaches of our solar system: deep-space lightning, crackling solar winds, and other cosmic events.

Stanford Lively Arts
Christopher O'Riley, Piano

Christopher O’Riley challenges the boundaries of classical and rock music in Reimaginings. Deftly juxtaposing piano preludes by Russian master Dmitri Shostakovich alongside his own original transcriptions of songs by the British rock group Radiohead on solo piano, O’Riley explores the music in a new context, revealing shared themes of love, loss, violence, and alienation.
