The Italian Saxophone Quartet:

Federico Mondelci, Marco Gerboni, Mario Marzi, Massimo Mazzoni

The formation in 1982 of the Italian Saxophone Quartet brought together four stellar Italian artists who, individually, had performed as soloists with such esteemed orchestras as La Scala, Milan and Florence Maggio Musicale, and under the batons of Seiji Ozawa and Zubin Mehta. Within three years the Quartet had won an array of chamber music competitions, including the ‘Premiere Ancona.’ Rome's Il Messaggero ranks the foursome as "among the most interesting groups on the Italian musical scene, as much for the originality of its instrumentation as for the unquestionable quality of its performance."

Rova:Arts Presents Improv:21 with Gino Robair - "Improvised Opera: Taking Emperor Norton to the Streets"

Gino Robair discusses the use of open-ended structures and improvisation to create an operatic work that is never the same twice.

I, Norton is an open-ended piece that can be performed by any number of people and assembled in a unique way for each performance. The literary elements behind the work are the writings attributed to Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, as well as mocking "false decrees" published in contemporary newspapers to cash in on the Emperor's notoriety.

DI TERRA - Unearthed (San Francisco Debut Performance)

Lisle Ellis - bass (NY)

Alberto Braida - piano (Italy)

Fabrizio Spera - drums (Italy)

DI TERRA, an international trio of musicians comprised of Alberto Braida of Milan (piano), Fabrizio Spera of Rome (drums, amplified objects, electronics... ), and the New York based Lisle Ellis(electro-acoustic bass instrument), is an informed unit implementing cutting edge instrumental technique and compositional structures to realize their musical vision.

Unearthed is DI TERRA’s program of instrumental music that traverses some of the most vital music terrain of the past century. It is the trio’s “unified field theory” linking Xenakis to Motown, T-bone Walker to Dead Machines and reveals the stylistic divisions such as classical, pop, rock, blues etc. to be a faded concept.

Del Sol String Quartet

A Civil Rights Reader for Strings, Laptop & DJ

The Del Sol String Quartet reunite with Daniel Bernard Roumain (whose String Quartet No. 4 they premiered at Other Minds 11 in March 2005) for an evening of cutting edge music-making.

Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) meets the Del Sol String Quartet, featuring special guest DJ Scientific. The Del Sol Quartet brings an evening of cutting edge music-making to Kanbar Hall, as they perform the work of this genre-defying young African-American composer. DBR is a pioneer in new forms as he marries the instrumentation of string quartet with electric violin, laptop and Hip Hop turntablist in a series of works inspired by major, iconic figures of the Civil Rights Era: Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Maya Angelou. Hanny Schmid Wyss

Hanny Schmid Wyss, Piano. Program: Four Sonatas (E major, A major, D minor, D major) by Domenico Scarlatti; Carneval de Vienne, Op.26 (Faschingsschwank aus Wien) by Robert Schumann; Fantasien, Op. 116, Book I by Johannes Brahms; Second Suite by Erwin Schulhoff; Quadriga, Op. 5 by Margrit Zimmermann

Hanny Schmid Wyss has acquired a solid reputation as a ‘triple threat’ classical musician, lauded for her solo appearances with major orchestras in the US and Europe, as well as for her chamber music recitals, and sought after as a musical scholar and lecturer. A multiple competition winner and a Medal Laureate at the Geneva International Piano Competition, her repertoire ranges from early Baroque to contemporary works, and her singularly expressive play has been praised both for its "attractive, nicely rounded tone " (The Houston Post) and "fiery commitment" (The Times, London).

Compositions by their legendary namesake highlight this program of Russian and other music by the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet, an ensemble whose St. Petersburg roots enrich and inform their unique interpretation of Russian composers, which in turn has generated a growing following in Eastern and Western Europe and their homeland.
